returnChimney Caps and Damper Controls

Every chimney needs a cap

chimney capChimney caps keep moisture from corroding metal chimneys and steel fireplace liners. It also prevents down drafts due to cross winds. If you have poor draft - get professional advise. Sometimes homeowners will remove the cap thinking this will improve the draft. If you have poor draft, the cap is not the problem If you have an over-sized chimney top - we can fabricate the right cap for you.

Do you have a fireplace insert that suffers from mysterious back draft problems? Call us, we can help. There are some very poorly designed chimney caps out there. We can find the one that works best for you.

Tip: take note if it is quite windy when back draft occurs - we can suggest a cap with better wind resistance

Do you have a masonry fireplace with a broken or faulty damper leading to poor flame control and heat loss when not in use?  These Chimney- top- dampers will fix the problem. They both have controls at the fire box for opening and closing the chimney top!  You can control the fire, seal in heat (when not in use), keep out unwanted pests.

returnChimney Snow and Ice Protection / Guard

Anatomy of Chimney Protection

snow protectionA: Upper guard prevents snow from sliding and ice from contacting the chimney

B: Lower guard(s) along the roof edge prevent lower snow from sliding and pulling the chimney or braces from below

C: Angle and position of braces prevents snow from weighing them down or sweeping them away

If snow builds up, it should be removed by the home owner as soon as possible.  This completes the chimney protection.  This is my current formula for steep steel roofs. For some reason, not all similar situations are created equal. Some home owners seem to have no trouble at all, while others have their chimney's unceremoniously removed annually. Maybe a north facing roof tends to have greater accumulation? It is not an exact science. It is true that these features add a cost to the installation. It is the home owner's decision alone to bear this extra fee. This illustration is to aid them with that decision. It remains the homeowner's responsibility to monitor weather conditions and remove snow accumulations as necessary.

Chimney Snow and Ice Guard

This customer came home to find his chimney in the back yard. The top was completely sheared off. There were some small plastic wedges screwed on the roof to hold the snow back, but they broke off. We replaced the crushed chimney piece (at the roof-line) and installed this 'Heavy Duty Ice & Snow Guard'.
